It’s almost time to wave goodbye to spring, and say hello to summer! However the sun isn’t peeking through the clouds quite as much as we’d like just yet, making it hard to get that sun-kissed look. That’s where fake tan comes into its own – allowing you to live your bronzed goddess dream in a safe way, without frazzling your skin in the sun or under a sunbed.

Fake tan is a bit of an art form, a constant battle with streaks, patches and tell-tale orange hands, but we’re here to help you fake it this summer with our top tanning tips! Read on to make sure you get that perfect streak-free fake tan, all summer long.

Preparation is key

Preparing your skin properly for fake tan is one of the most important stages of the process. Moisturising regularly well in advance of putting on fake tan will make sure that it doesn’t stick to dry patches and stays even.

To keep your limbs looking lovely and feeling smooth, here are some of our favourite moisturisers:

Firstly there’s our Fruits Coconut and Vanilla Body Butter which has a delicious tropical coconut scent. The body butter is also available in lemon and black pepper, as well as 6 other scents. Click here to view the full range.

If you have a need for speed when it comes to moisturising, then the Nivea In-Shower Body Moisturiser range is perfect for you. It’s made to be used in the shower so can be applied quickly, and before you know it you’ll be good to go.

Top tip: Make sure you let your moisturiser sink in for a while before applying your tanning product.

Exfoliating is another key step to getting gorgeously glowing skin; it removes dead skin cells to create a blank canvas for your tan to be applied to. We love the St. Ives Apricot Invigorating Scrub and the Kiss Exfoliating Body Scrub. Just scoop or squirt a small amount onto your hand and scrub in a swirling motion, being careful not to scrub too hard, as this may cause irritation. If you’re fake tanning your face as well, you should use a light exfoliator. Try the Skin Therapy Tea Tree Facial Scrub. It gently exfoliates whilst cleansing, and helps to remove dead skin cells.

A close shave

When shaving your legs, make sure you do this a day or so before applying your tan. Your skin won’t be as sensitive and will be less likely to react to the formulation of your fake tan. Check out our great range of shavers here.

Mitt up and apply

Getting the dreaded orange hands after fake tanning is easily avoidable if you use a mitt or latex gloves. This St. Moriz Applicator Mitt is the best way to prevent orange hands, just be sure to apply your fake tan in a circular motion to ensure an even coverage.

Choose somewhere with bright, natural lighting to make sure you don’t over tan. To avoid smudging the bits that you’ve already done, work from your feet upwards – finishing with your arms. Focus on the areas between your toes and the back of your ankles, not forgetting your ears and armpits, as this is where tan is more likely to show up as being fake.

Top tip: To keep your hands tanned and natural looking, apply a light sweep of the mitt over each hand in turn and wipe over your nails to make sure it doesn’t discolour your nail beds or polish.

Fake tan favourites

One of our favourite fake tan products is the Garnier Ambre Solaire No Streaks Bronzer – a quick and easy spray. It activates after just 3 hours, and because it’s a spray it dries super-fast and gives a gorgeously even colour.

Experiment with a few different products to find the right one for you. If you use a product that’s too dark for you, your tan will look unnatural. Test products on an area of the body that’s not on show before applying all over. If you have fair skin, try a gradual tanner like the Garnier Summer Body Moisturising Lotion so you can gradually build-up to a sun-kissed glow.

There are also mousses (the St. Moriz Tanning Mousse is fantastic) and lotions which are great for long-lasting and instant tanning – mousses will generally dry quicker than creams or lotions.

Top tip: Use your hairdryer on a cool setting to gently blast your body and help it dry.

Our final tip is to keep hydrated, drinking as much water as possible to prolong your tan. Drinking plenty of water and applying a daily moisturiser will help keep your faux glow for longer.

So there you have it, a wealth of tanning knowledge to make sure you get the best fake tan possible – finding your perfect pantone rather than 50 shades of orange! Make sure you check out our great tanning range online or instore, helping you to get glowing this summer.
