With the long six-week summer holiday in full swing, it’s the ideal time to make the most of the good weather, get a breath of fresh air and head to the coast. Sand between your toes, sun on your back and a cone of fish and chips… count us in!

When you’ve got kids in tow, heading to the beach takes a little more organising, and you may need a few toys and games to keep them entertained. Here’s our handy guide on how to have a great seaside adventure…

Where’s good to go?

Here in the UK we’re blessed with some of the very best beaches which are simply glorious… well, when the sun shines! It’s always handy to go to your nearest beach to cut down on travel time, but if you’re up for an adventure, we’d recommend the following:

Holkham Beach, Norfolk
Holkham Bay is a stunning multi-award winning beach that you may recognise from the closing scenes of Shakespeare in Love. With four miles of white-golden sand set against a backdrop of woodlands, there’s plenty of space for picnics and outdoor games. For those who like a nice stroll, the coastal walk to Wells is not to be missed.

Tenby, Pembrokeshire
Recently voted one of the top 5 beach destinations in the UK, Tenby has three stunning beaches to explore. As well as the usual beach activities, there’s loads for kids to do. The lifeboat station is open to the public in the summer, and for a few quid you can catch a boat to Caldey – an island run by monks with great walks and views.

Fistral Beach, Cornwall
Newquay has a reputation for being the best beach for surfing in the UK, so if you’ve got active kids, Fistral Beach is the place to be! You’ll find seafront facilities (always handy) and equipment hire – there’s even surfing lessons for both kids and adults.

St Mary’s Bay, Broadstairs
A gorgeous sandy beach with plenty of rock pools to explore!

Weymouth, Dorset
The seas at Weymouth are great for swimming in and the soft, golden sand is perfect for building sandcastles! There’s also plenty of entertainment for the kids including pedalos, trampolines and mini golf.

Stokes Bay, Hampshire
Enjoy views of the Isle of Wight from this shingle beach. There’s a grassy area which is perfect for barbecues too.

Seaburn, Tyne and Wear
Stroll along wide, sandy beaches at Seaburn where you’ll also find plenty of child-friendly facilities including play areas and pedestrian only promenades.

Bognor Regis (East), West Sussex
This sand and shingle beach has won a Seaside Award this year. There’s plenty of entertainment and attractions including a promenade train, mini golf and even fitness trails for the more active families!

Pack up the perfect picnic

Avoid the long queues and high food prices by packing a delicious picnic. Tick these bits off your list and you’re halfway there…

Coolers and bags – probably one of the most important items on your checklist to keep your food and drinks cool and fresh.
Cups – go for good old fashioned tumblers and wine glasses for the adults!
Plates & bowls, and cutlery
Ice packs – to keep all your nibbles and drinks chilled for longer
Picnic rug
Laundry basket – A beach must-have! Go for one with holes and use it to transport all your bits and bobs across the beach. The sand and water will drain through the holes so you don’t have to worry about taking half the beach back home with you!

Top 5 seaside games

We always recommend packing a couple of games before hitting the beach. This’ll ensure the kids are kept entertained, and having so much fun they won’t want to leave! Here are our top picks:

1. Wilko Bucket with Spade £1.50
A bucket and spade is one of those summer essentials you won’t want to go without. Let their imagination run wild making sand castles and digging holes.

2. Pop-Up Football Goal £8
Our pop up goal folds away in a carry bag and pops up when you need it, making it great for taking to the beach. And don’t forget to check out our range of footballs – the goal will be disappointing without one!

3. Shaded Play Pool £6
Ideal for kids over two years old, little ones will love splashing around in this small pool. The arched ladybird and frog designs will help keep them shaded from the sun.

4. Catch Them Out Game £2
Another iconic summer essential! There’s loads of fun to be had throwing the sticky ball around, and it’s a game that’ll be even more fun when jumping around in the sea.

5. Baseball Set £4
Our foam baseball set is great fun for the whole family. It’s one for when you’ve got plenty of space – set a few markers out, and try and hit a home run!
