Here’s a fun Halloween activity to try with the kids. Get them making some Halloween themed mobiles. These are perfect for adding a creepy touch to kids’ Halloween parties (and adults’ Halloween parties too!).
You will need…
- orange, black and white card
- purple tissue paper
- 2 wire coat hangers
- embroidery thread or fishing wire
- sticky tape
Step 1. Draw pumpkin, ghost and bat shapes on the white card. These will be your mobile templates. You can make them all the same size or have bigger and smaller ones, it’s up to you!
Step 2. Using the pumpkin template, draw 2 pumpkin shapes on the orange card and one on the purple tissue paper and cut out. Cut out eyes, nose and mouth shapes on the orange pieces (try and make sure these are in the same place on each piece) and cut out. Leave the purple piece untouched. Sandwich the purple tissue paper pumpkin between the 2 orange pumpkins and stick together.
Step 3. Draw around your bat template on the black card and then cut out. Don’t forget to cut out some eyes too!
Step 4. Along with the ghosts you drew in step 1 (make sure you give them some eyes too!), you now have all your pieces for your Halloween mobile. This next bit can be a bit fiddly, so adult supervision is needed. Make a small hole at the top of each decoration using a pin, and then tie a length of embroidery thread through each hole.
Step 5. Arrange the 2 coat hangers in a cross shape and tape together at the top and bottom to secure.
Step 6. Hang up your coat hanger cross and start tying the decorations to it. Vary the lengths of the thread so they don’t all hang at the same level. Trim off any excess thread.
Step 7. Ta dah! Your hair-raising Halloween mobile is complete!
• Hang your mobile next to a window to let the light shine through the pumpkins.
• Why not design your own spooky characters for your mobile? Try a witch, or a black cat, or even a vampire!
• If you have time, make plenty of mobiles and hang them around the room at your Halloween party.
