Cleaning the floor

Keeping floors spotlessly clean can be a bit of a nightmare – from onion peel lurking behind the bin, to teabag drips and that unidentified sticky patch that will forever remain a mystery! To make life just that little bit easier, we’ve pulled together our top tips for cleaning different floor surfaces.

Sweep up in seconds

Any hard floor will need to be swept regularly, but we’ve all faced the frustration of going over the same area countless times only to find some dust and dirt left behind! That’s where the Vileda 2 in 1 Universal Broom comes in. The broom’s black bristles collect fine dust, whilst the grey bristles collect dirt and hair. It’s perfect for a one-sweep clean on all indoor hard floors. If you like bold, bright colours, check out our Colour Play range – we’ve got brooms in teal, purple and green. For smaller clean-up jobs, we’ve got a great selection of dustpans and brushes.

The in-between clean

For a speedy in-between clean, use the Vileda 1, 2 Spray Mop – it’s ideal for everyday spills in the home, and can be used on wood, laminate, tiled and vinyl flooring. The handle has a special compartment which can be filled with water or cleaning solution, then all that’s needed is a simple pull of the trigger and a fine mist sprays from the bottom of the mop! Simply spray and mop straight away, with no need for a bucket.

Taking care of hard floors – choose the right mop!

Ceramic tiles
Ceramic tiles come in a variety of colours, patterns and textures – and thankfully need little maintenance to keep them looking great. After brushing, simply mop regularly, in a figure-of-eight action, drawing the mop towards you for maximum effect and particle pick up. For ceramic tiles, we’d recommend our easy-to-use Wilko Twist Mop, Wilko Sponge Mop and the Vileda Magic Mop.

Top tip – Sponge mops are super-absorbent, and most come with a self-wringing mechanism, meaning no additional bucket with wringer is needed. Great for people who don’t have a lot of cupboard space.

Wooden & laminates

Try to keep these floors free of grit and dirt particles, as they can scratch the surface of your flooring. When mopping, too much water can break down the surface varnish and warp the wood over time. Try a mop with a bucket and wringer, which will ensure you’re not putting too much water on your wood and laminate floors.

Its popularity dipped after the 1960’s, but it’s back! Linoleum is once again a popular flooring option. Linoleum flooring has the same characteristics as wood – it’s tough and durable but must be protected from moisture. Again, choose a mop that doesn’t hold excessive water, such as the Wilko Spray Mop or Vileda 1, 2 Spray Mop.

Vinyl is one of the more popular types of floors found in homes, particularly those with children and pets. Vinyl flooring offers the look of ceramic tiles or wood, but is more cost-effective. You can use all mops on vinyl as it’s tough and durable. Check out our stylish Spin Dry Mop with Bucket – with it’s sophisticated monochrome palette, it’ll make cleaning vinyl floors a breeze!
