The kitchen is often the busiest room in the home, and when you have a family and a busy lifestyle you need a space that is functional, but which also expresses your personality. Here, we look at some of the best ways to accessorise and refresh your kitchen…

Light and life

Lighting is important to get right in a kitchen. It’s both a space for preparing food, and for entertaining, so a dimmer switch is a good solution for turning the lighting down and setting the mood once you’ve prepared your meal! In a lot of new properties halogen spotlights are often used, but they don’t necessarily show your personality. A statement light fixture would be perfect for adding some drama to your kitchen and this Wilko comet ceiling light is ideal. Use two to frame the kitchen units or just one if your kitchen space is smaller. Be sure to not use fabric lampshades as they will absorb cooking oils and smells and will become discoloured.

Blinding idea

Blinds are great for using in a kitchen as curtains absorb smells and oils when you’re cooking and can be a pain to put in the washing machine regularly. At Wilko we have a great range of blinds including Venetian, roller and vertical. Venetian blinds are great as they allow for privacy and are surprisingly easy to clean, especially if you have a Wilko blind cleaner! This allows you to dust up to 6 slats and helps to keep your blinds sparkling. Find out how to hang blinds here.

Tools of the trade

Your dream kitchen may include all sorts of fancy gadgets, but the bank balance might not always allow it. For example, standing mixers are a fantastic addition to any keen baker’s kitchen, but can often be pricey. Not this Wilko vintage-inspired standing mixer, though! It comes in cream and black and is a steal at £80.

The mixers also come with a dough hook and a beater as well as 12 different speed settings, perfect for anything you could possibly want to mix!

Guess who’s coming to dinner?

Dinnerware is a great way to express yourself, and with lots of different styles to choose from it can often be difficult to decide! At Wilko we have a range of styles including simple white, rustic and vintage inspired sets.

You’ll need some cutlery to eat your yummy meals with, too! At Wilko we have classic silver cutlery sets, as well as individual knife, fork and spoon packs if you seem to have a spoon thief out on the loose! Don’t forget to use a cutlery tray to prevent everything flailing loosely around in your drawer. At Wilko we have these in both chrome and coloured plastic.

Now there is nothing like having a cuppa in your favourite mug, but if you want to do a mini kitchen makeover some new mugs may be in order. We have dozens of different designs at Wilko, including this delicate floral cup and saucer.  Not only is it perfect for tea parties but it is also dishwasher and microwave safe.

Evoking memories of cold camping trips, this retro-inspired mug is a stylish addition to any kitchen.

Having dinners in front of the TV is a rare treat, and this summery, yellow, circular tray is too good not to use! Although you don’t always have to use them for cheeky TV meals; you can use them as display trays for arranging kitchen supplies, like condiments, or for serving drinks and snacks to friends and family when they visit.

Final flourish

Kitchen cabinets with clear panels are ideal for storing ornaments or kitchen utensils that are too pretty to hide away. This Wilko cow jug is a great novelty item to keep on show, and will no doubt become a household favourite at tea time. If you love to cook and bake and have a stack of recipe books, then this white heart recipe book stand with scalloped edges will be an ideal addition to your kitchen. Instead of keeping books stuffed away in cupboards why not use this to keep your favourite recipe book out on display? You never know, it may inspire you to try out a new recipe!

As you can see there are many different ways to update and refresh your kitchen without spending a huge amount. If you have any other ideas then please let us know on Twitter or Facebook as we would love to hear your thoughts!
