Maude’s back with another of her favourite Halloween recipes. Of course, in the McEerie household, they’re just called “recipes” – because every day is Halloween! Here’s Maude, with her recipe for horrifying hotdog mummies (plus two dips to eat them with!).

  • 8 frankfurters
  • 1 packet of puff pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • mustard, for decoration

Making your mummies

Making-hotdog-mummies Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6.

Step 2 – Roll out the puff pastry onto a floured surface until it is a large rectangle about half a centimetre thick.

Step 3 – Cut the pastry into long strips about 1 cm wide.

Step 4 – Remove the frankfurters from their packaging and pat dry.

Step 5 – Wrap your pastry strips around each frankfurter. Each one should use approximately 2 strips. Remember to leave a space for the eyes!

Step 6 – Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and place your mummies on it. Brush each mummy with beaten egg.

Step 7 – Put in the oven for 10-15 minutes until pastry is golden brown.

Step 8 – Once your mummies have cooled slightly, use a cocktail stick to dot on some mustard “eyes”.

Why not serve with some dips?

Here are 2 recipes for dips to serve with your hotdog mummies:

Monster Mush

  • 1 large avocado
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • salt & pepper
  • juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Mash the avocado using a fork, then add the lemon juice. Crush the garlic and add to the mixture, then add the olive oil. Season with salt & pepper then give it a good stir to make sure it’s all mixed.

Spicy Tomato Devil Dip

  • 1 pack cherry tomatoes
  • 2tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 red chilli
  • a sprinkle of sugar
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • salt & pepper

Blend the tomatoes and olive oil in a blender. Remove from blender and add the tomato puree and chopped chilli. Season with salt, pepper and sugar and mix well.
