We’ve certainly had a lot to celebrate this summer, with the Queen’s official birthday, and England, Wales and Northern Ireland giving us the odd moment to cheer in Euro 2016! And there’s still plenty to get excited about with the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio… and of course the kids’ long six-week summer holiday!
Here at Wilko we don’t need an excuse to get out into the garden, but there’s no better way to make the most of this summer’s celebrations than by having an outdoor party or get-together. Whether it’s having friends and family over for a BBQ, organising a shindig as the sun goes down or just having lunch in the garden with the kids, it’s the perfect time of year to get some fresh air and make the most of your outdoor space.
When having your celebration or party, giving it a theme can make it even more fun. And with so much to celebrate here in good old Blighty this summer, a British theme is bound to go down a storm.
So whilst the sun’s shining, grab your hat, sunglasses and suncream, and check out our guide on how to create a Great British garden party…
Prepare to party with red, white and blue
Start your patriotic party by getting creative and decorating your outdoor dining table in red white and blue. To help make it easy, we’ve created a disposable party range with a very British design. The collection contains paper plates, paper cups and a table covers – we’ve also got napkins in red and white, helping you to create a Great British summer party in no time.
You could even make a few mini decorations by printing small British flags and sticking them to cocktail sticks, and don’t forget to blow up a few balloons for extra colour!
Top tip: for added fun, why not ask guests to dress up as British celebrities and historical figures?
Next, move onto nice nibbles and bite-sized British classics
When it comes to serving up grub, finger food is always a good option. Start with sarnies – there’s nothing more British than cucumber, egg mayo or ham and mustard. They can be made up the night before, making the day of your celebration even easier. Sausage rolls, scotch eggs and sausages on cocktail sticks are sure to go down well with both kids and adults.
If you’ve got time to dish up hot food, both bacon butties and fish and chips in small cups are about as British as you can get – and you’ll be sure to send guests home happy! Brits also love a BBQ, check out our grilled to perfection BBQ blog for some great tips, and if your old BBQ is starting to look a bit tired, hop across to our BBQ section on wilko.com for some brilliant bargains.
If you decide to serve up a few sweet treats, you can’t go wrong with strawberries and cream. Bakewell tarts are a sure-fire hit, and everyone loves a bit of trifle. Again, try and make them the night before to save time on the day.
Cold drinks for hot summer days
Large drink dispensers are great for saving time as you don’t have to keep topping up guests’ drinks. Fill with a British classic like punch or Pimm’s. Cider becomes even more popular in the summer and there’s nothing better than a nice cold cider with ice… and with our homebrew range, you could even make your own at home to save the pennies! Check out our serving summer drinks blog for more inspiration.
Keep food and drink cool on those summer scorchers
With our great range of cool boxes, cool bags and ice packs, you’ll cut down on trips to the fridge for drinks and snacks. We’ve even got a British themed red, white and blue cool box that’ll keep contents cold for up to 9 hours – perfect for those summer soirees that last long into the night!
