Whether you’re jetting off somewhere exotic on your holiday or you’re taking advantage of the stunning British coastlines, you’ll want to make sure you’re looking your best this summer. From getting your skin ready for your holiday to achieving the perfect make-up, we’ve got everything covered with our hot summer beauty tips.

Before your holiday…

In order to look your best before your holiday, there are a number of things you can do to ensure you’re beach ready.

1. Exfoliate

To get a good overall tan, you’ll need to exfoliate your skin to get rid of any dry patches. It’ll help to leave your skin smoother and will give you a natural look and it’s also great for doing before you apply fake tan. Use an exfoliating body scrub and a face mask to cover all areas.

Top tip – don’t forget to treat those rougher areas too, particularly the heels of your feet as these tend to have much tougher skin. Use a pumice stone to tackle these areas – or treat yourself to a pedicure just before you go so you’re fully relaxed.

2. Hair removal

You’ll want to de-fuzz before you hit the beach so get rid of unwanted hair by waxing, shaving or using hair removal cream.

Top tip – if you’re applying fake tan before you go away, try to wax or shave the day before so you don’t get any blotches of tanner in your hair follicles.

3. Fake tan

If you’ve not managed to get any sun before your holiday, you might want to apply some fake tan so you don’t feel as washed out. Make sure you’re fully moisturised and exfoliated before you do this so you don’t get any patches where you’ve got dry skin. Products that have natural oils or moisturisers in them are ideal.

Top tip – if you find you’ve got some fake tan stains on your hands use a small amount of olive oil on them as well as some salt to scrub out the stain. Or, use our Wilko self-tan removal wipes!

4. Nails

Getting your nails in top shape before you go away is another way to complete your beach look in style, and it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Opt for a vibrant nail varnish to reflect your summery mood or a neutral colour for a more natural look.

Top tip – gel finish nail polishes are perfect as they’ll provide a long-lasting finish so you don’t have to keep topping up your polish on holiday.

During your holiday…

You may look beautifully refreshed before you jet off on the plane but it’s also important to keep on top of your beauty regime while you’re on holiday. Here are some simple tips as to how you can keep your skin, hair and face looking fantastic for your entire holiday.

1. Hair

With all of the exposure to sun, sea and sand, your hair needs some tender loving care while you’re on holiday. Wash it regularly and condition it too to keep it shining and protected against the elements. Coconut oil is a great natural source for protecting your hair against UV rays; just put it in your hair after you’ve washed it and it’ll act like a leave-in conditioner.

Top tip – if you’re wanting a lighter hair colour, squeeze a little bit of lemon juice into your hair. This is activated by the sun and helps to create natural highlights, offering gorgeous caramel tones for brunettes and lighter colours for blondes.

2. Make-up

There’s nothing worse than getting all hot and sweaty on holiday and finding your make-up is sliding off your face, so be prepared for the warmer temperatures when you complete your morning make-up routine.

Start with a primer once you’ve moisturised (an oil-free moisturiser is best) as this will help to keep your make-up in place. Then, opt for a foundation (again, oil-free is best here) that’s a shade darker than the one you use in winter so you can mix them together to get the most natural look, gradually getting darker as you enhance your tan.

It goes without saying that waterproof mascara is a must, as are natural eye shadows and lipsticks to give you that effortless look. Don’t forget your eyebrows too; try to get these in shape before your holiday and use an eyebrow pencil to accentuate them.

3. Sleep

We all know how important it is to get our daily quota of sleep and this is no less important when we’re on holiday. Getting some valuable shut-eye will help to keep you looking fresher and will remove those bags from under your eyes.

Top tip – if you are out partying until the early hours and you have indulged in a few too many cocktails, use some cotton wool balls soaked in cold water to revive your eyes. Simply place them over your closed eyes for 10 minutes and voila!

4. Moisturising

Even though you’re using sun cream all day, don’t forget to keep on top of your moisturising at night too. An after sun lotion is perfect for moisturising your body and will help to keep your skin hydrated to prevent the dreaded peeling process!

If you do manage to miss some areas with your sun cream and you’ve got some sore sunburn patches, there are a number of natural remedies you can try to soothe the burn. Try rubbing cold yoghurt on the area, leaving for ten minutes. Or, opt for aloe vera gel as this is a natural anti-inflammatory…one of our team members suggests putting it in the fridge before use for added cooling!

Top tip – talc powder is the perfect accessory for your holiday. Not only does it act as a dry shampoo to get rid of greasy locks but it’s also a great way of drying your skin so you don’t rub your tan off!

With all of these handy tips in mind, you’ll not just be looking glamorous for your holiday but for the whole summer too! Don’t forget to check out our full beauty ranges and travel section so you’ve got everything you need to make this a summer to remember.
