Whether you’re having a picnic, an al fresco meal or a traditional barbecue, dining outdoors is one of the best ways to enjoy the summer weather. To make sure you’re enjoying this outdoor dining in style, we’ve put together some tips on how to create the perfect dining space in your garden.
1. The dining space
The first thing to consider is what space in your garden is going to be best for dining. Think about what area of your garden gets the most sun and position your bistro set to accommodate it.
Secondly, consider space. Allow for moving chairs and tables around, particularly when you’ve got lots of friends and family coming round.
Finally, if you have a particularly large garden, think about positioning your dining table close to the kitchen. A long distance from your kitchen to your outdoor table may put you off having a spontaneous lunch in your garden!
2. The dining furniture
If you’ve got lots of space to play with, a large table with plenty of seats is a must. However, if room is a little more limited, opt for folding chairs and tables or bistro sets that can be neatly stored away while they’re not in use.
If you want to enjoy your outdoor space for more than just dining, why not opt for a lounge set that you can also enjoy some indulgent chill out sessions on?
Don’t forget to consider the style of furniture you’re choosing too. There’s a great range of traditional and contemporary designs at Wilko, which will suit a number of settings. If you’ve got a cottage or country setting, wooden furniture is ideal while modern spaces will be complemented with black minimalistic sets.
3. Be where the sun shines
While you’re bound to want to soak up some rays in your outdoor space, also consider creating a space where you can enjoy the shade too. Choose an area that will have natural shade, or install a parasol in the dining area so you can create shade whenever you wish. Pergolas are also a natural way of creating shade.
Should you be hosting a party this summer, you could also put up a gazebo to create a large shaded space for people to sit under – it’s also a great place to put food so it’s not in direct sunlight.
5. Dining in the evening
When the sun sets it doesn’t mean you need to head indoors but it does mean you need to bring some mood lighting to your seating area. Simple tealights will create a relaxing ambience, as will fairy lights intertwined on your trellises. Solar lights will look great around your flowerbeds.
And, because the temperature can soon drop later in the evening, make sure you’ve got a fire pit or chimenea that you and your friends can gather round. It’ll create a fabulous focal point.
6. Play on the senses
Enhance your garden space with the use of plants and flowers. Lavender, sweet peas and roses are perfect. Not only are they visually appealing, they’ll also create wonderful smells; helping to attract birds, butterflies and bees. Add to this a water fountain and you’ll really feel like you’ve escaped into a secret garden!
How about planting herbs too? Besides looking and smelling great, they’re perfect for adding into your cooking!
7. Bring the cooking outdoors
No dining space is going to be complete without somewhere to cook and your choice of barbecue can be tailored to fit in with your garden design.
With all of these elements, your garden will be transformed into a luxurious outdoor dining space in no time. Team it with some garden décor and you’re certain to be deemed the garden party king or queen this year!
